Fans of Inside Out (2015) had been waiting for the sequel for almost 10 years, and the great interest of the public towards Inside Out 2 has been demonstrated by the box office results, which currently amount to 1.6 billion dollars worldwide. Excellent data that gives hope for a potential third film. Pete Docter, creative director of Pixar Animation Studios, spoke about the possibility of a new sequel.

Inside Out: Creative Director Explains: “I Wish There Was a Mindset That We’ve Only Seen Three Percent of This Big World”

The long-awaited Inside Out 2 has surpassed viewers’ expectations by becoming a phenomenon, taking first place at the 2024 box office globally and domestically, and has also become the highest-grossing animated film of all time – knocking Frozen 2 (2019) off the top spot. The film, which continues to follow the life of Riley, now a teenager, and her new emotional challenges, has captivated young and old alike with a thrilling and deeply emotional story.

In a recent interview with Fandango, Pete Docter, Pixar’s director and director of the first Inside Out, said that they are currently “thinking about ideas” for a potential third installment. Docter explained: “We’re in the same place we were after [Inside Out]. We’re at a point where we’re thinking, ‘Okay if we’re going to do something, what can it be?’ And we’re developing ideas. But we don’t know yet.” Speaking about the larger narrative universe of Inside Out, Docter said: “I would love for there to be this idea that we’ve only seen three percent of this vast world, and there’s so much more out there.”

The director and executive producer revealed that the creative development team doesn’t throw out ideas that were scrapped in the first or second film: “There’s still so much to explore, a lot of things that we had written down for the first film or the second film, but also, in the end, they didn’t work for whatever reason, maybe they didn’t fit thematically. But we really have so much more to work with.”
