The film Joker: Folie à Deux, directed by Todd Phillips, will make its world debut at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. In an exclusive interview with Variety, the behind-the-scenes story of the genesis of this long-awaited sequel, which sees the return of Joaquin Phoenix in the role of Arthur Fleck, was revealed. The spark that gave life to the second chapter was lit by Phoenix himself. After shooting the first Joker, the actor was not ready to leave the tormented Arthur behind.
One night, Phoenix dreamed of seeing Arthur performing on a stage, telling jokes and singing, while Phillips directed him from behind the scenes. Upon waking up, Phoenix, still elated, immediately called the director, proposing the idea of making a stage show centered on this character. Initially, the two seriously considered the possibility of staging a show on Broadway. Still, they came up against the practical complexities: between the time needed to stage it and the commitment required from Phoenix, the idea seemed difficult to realize. So they thought about a scaled-down version, to be performed at the Carlyle Hotel, but the COVID-19 pandemic put everything on hold.
Despite the difficulties, the idea of Arthur expressing himself through music was not abandoned. Phillips and screenwriter Scott Silver decided to incorporate this idea into the script of the new film, turning it into a musical. Lady Gaga, who stars alongside Phoenix, praised Phillips for his creative boldness. She explained how the film manages to blend music, dance, drama, and comedy, creating an emotional mix that highlights Phillips' directorial skills. Joker: Folie à Deux promises to be a bold and innovative sequel that surpasses traditional expectations and offers audiences a cinematic experience rich in originality, with a strong musical component that further enriches the narrative.
