Warner Bros. has released the trailer for Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17, the highly anticipated new film from the Oscar-winning Parasite star. Based on the 2022 novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, the sci-fi thriller stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, a decidedly “expendable” employee. In the novel, Mickey is sent on dangerous missions to colonize an ice planet. When one version of Mickey dies, a replacement is created, retaining most of his memories. In addition to Pattinson, the cast includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.
Mickey 17 is directed and written by Bong, who also produces it through his company Offscreen. Also producing are Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner of Plan B and Dooho Choi of Kate Street Pictures. Warner Bros. has changed the film’s theatrical release date several times, most recently moving the film from March 29, 2024, to a new date of January 2025. Mickey 17 is Bong’s first feature film release since the smash hit of his 2019 thriller Parasite, which told the story of a working-class Korean family who deceitfully infiltrates the home of a wealthy family. Parasite was the first foreign-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
The film also won Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best International Film. Bong’s other notable films include Snowpiercer, Okja, Memoirs of a Murderer, The Host, and Mother. Pattinson recently played the iconic DC masked hero in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, bringing a dark new sensibility to the character of Bruce Wayne to the big screen. His recent sci-fi roles include Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and Claire Denis’ High Life. Mickey 17 will be distributed in Italian theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures starting January 30, 2025.
