Actor Jude Law looks back on his role in Captain Marvel and reveals that he wished he had done more as the MCU villain Yon-Rogg. In 2019, Captain Marvel introduced the titular Avenger alongside the Kree and Skrulls. Captain Marvel’s main antagonist is Kree commander Yon-Rogg, who turns on his apprentice Carol Danvers, and attempts to eliminate the Skrulls. Carol Danvers defeats Yon-Rogg at the end of Captain Marvel but chooses to spare his life to send a warning to the Supreme Intelligence.
Speaking to Variety, Jude Law explains that he wanted to explore his role as Captain Marvel more. Law wished Yon-Rogg “had more of an arc” and “could have used more humor.” The actor also explains that while the stunt training is thorough, the costumes make the physical performance a difficult task. Read Law’s full comments below:
“I don’t think you could have gotten much more out of Yon-Rogg,” Law says. “For me, it was the pinnacle of Marvel.”
“It was a really cool experience. I wish I could have had a little more fun with the part. I wanted him to be more arched. I wanted him to be more humorous. Also, those suits are hard to move in because they’re made of thick rubber. You go to stunt camp for a couple months, and you do all these fight rehearsals and you learn how to do all this stuff. Then you put the suit on and you think, ‘Oh! I can’t touch my toes! How am I going to do all this stuff with this thing on?’ But then you figure it out.”
What Jude Law’s Captain Marvel Comments Mean
Jude Law’s interest in a more developed Yon-Rogg highlights a common problem with MCU antagonists. While Marvel Studios has introduced complex and well-known villains like Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, and Josh Brolin’s Thanos, the MCU has introduced villains with great potential and great casting, but rather insignificant appearances and premature departures. Villains like Jude Law’s Yon-Rogg, Christopher Eccleston’s Malekith, and Mads Mikkelsen’s Kaecilius could have been popular characters with unique cinematic arcs. Unfortunately, they were all unique antagonists.
