With the world’s eyes on the US election, movies seem to have taken a backseat, although in light of Donald Trump’s dismal re-election, Venom: The Last Dance may be the biggest winner of last “election night.” According to Variety, theaters received a higher-than-usual turnout yesterday (and are already packed on Tuesday thanks to discounted tickets). While we don’t have specific numbers yet, the third Venom installment is expected to get a significant financial boost. After all, what better way to unplug from the real world than to unplug with Tom Hardy’s latest madcap adventure as the Lethal Protector?
Venom: The Last Dance Makes a Strong Run at the Box Office
Venom: The Last Dance grossed $2.1 million on Monday and has reached $92 million in North America. The third installment also continues to outperform expectations in China, where its cume has reached $73.5 million; in the coming weeks, will almost certainly surpass Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s $86.9 million haul to become the highest-grossing comic book movie in the Middle Kingdom since COVID.
The film clearly struck a chord, and in an interview, writer/director Kelly Marcel had this to say about how to craft the most epic conclusion to the trilogy:
“I wanted to get out of San Francisco, out of the darkness and the night, and get Eddie and Venom into these epic landscapes and daylight and shoot it as realistically as possible. The fast-paced sequence is all hands-on. It’s a bunch of people, including Tom Hardy, underwater in a tank for two weeks. He’s actually on that motorcycle, we’re actually blowing things up in that third act outside, and while we used little green screen elements here and there, the majority of the movie is hands-on, which is something I’m really, really proud of.”
